Advantages: PM HIP is a fast emerging part manufacturing technique that yields consistent composition, whose mechanical properties meet and often exceed those of forged counterparts. As a near net shape technique it avoids the use of weldments to enhance part complexity while maintaining a consistent grain size through thick section features. This makes it especially suitable for safety critical applications.
Method: An elaborated canister of the intended part is loaded with powdered metal and then fully consolidated within a hot isostatic press. The canister shrinks during the process, and this deformation is governed by several factors such as the stiffness of the material, the number and location of weldments, and the particle size distribution to name a few. Hence the key to success lies in the effective simulation of this consolidation process.
Prototyping: SME Bridge is well versed in the process, outcomes and advantages of part manufacture via PM HIP. We intend to facilitate the uptake of this technology by offering customers the ablity to get their parts manufactured through us with the aid of a proprietary simulation software, currently under development.
